Fawcett Society Challenge Government Spending Cuts under Equality Legislation

After chancellor George Osborne stipulated in his emergency Budget pay freezes for two years and double-digit cuts the public sector may never be the same again. But gender campaign organisation the Fawcett Society argues that the cuts will affect women disproportionately, given that conservative estimates find they will take the biggest hit in income without enjoying changes to the tax system as much as men.

Upgrade of Traveller Site given Go Ahead.

A £1.63 million upgrade of a Lincolnshire traveller site has been given the go-ahead. County council planners agreed the plans to upgrade the site at Summergangs Lane, Gainsborough, which will see improved facilities and security. The project has received funding of about £1.24m from the Homes And Communities Agency, with Lincolnshire County Council topping up the extra £390,000.

Beach Wheelchairs

BEACHES along the east coast will be fully accessible to disabled people for the first time this year. {image1} Beach wheelchairs will be available for hire in Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea thanks to the East Coast Local Action Group. The introduction of the beach wheelchairs supports a series of improvement works along the coast as part of a programme by East Lindsey District Council, aimed at ensuring no one is excluded from taking part in activities because of their level of ability.

UK Government to impose a limit on non EU immigration

The number of workers entering the UK from outside Europe will be controlled by a new limit following a 12-week government consultation that will run until the end of September. Permanent limits on non EU economic migration routes will then be decided and put in place by 1 April 2011.
