6th September 2010The number of foreign students let into the UK is "unsustainable", immigration minister Damian Green will say. In a speech later, he will question whether Britain is attracting the best students - with only half of student visas issued for university courses. Mr Green's comments on Radio 4 this morning come as Home Office research suggests one-fifth of students were still in the UK five years after being granted visas. The Home Office study tracked non-EU migrants who came to the UK in 2004. The largest group - some 185,000 people - were students, and 21% were still in the country five years later

New Equality Duty May Require Publishing of Equality Data
1st September 2010A new government consultation on the General Equality Duty is asking whether publishing equality performance data will increase accountability to the public. According to the plans public bodies that are expected to deliver the new Equality duty (those employing 150 or more) will be expected to publish annual data on how they are performing. This will enable the individuals to hold public bodies to account should they significantly underperform on their equalities obligations.

31st August 2010Net migration to the UK rose last year to 196,000, up by 33,000 from the number in 2008. Office for National Statistics figures show 4% fewer people arrived in the UK last year - 567,000 compared with 590,000 in 2008 - but the number who left fell further, by 13% to 371,000. Home Office data shows a 37% rise in people granted settlement in the UK between June 2009 and June 2010.
